Ready for HOPE 2? Na Hong-jin Teases a Sequel, Military Reinforcements, and… North Korea?!

Just when you thought Na Hong-jin’s sci-fi blockbuster HOPE couldn’t get any wilder, the director himself has dropped massive hints about a potential sequel—and it sounds like an absolute rollercoaster!

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter on September 16, Na revealed that he actually mapped out HOPE as a multi-part epic from the very beginning. “As the story grew, I realized that to tell the whole tale, I’d need at least one sequel, maybe even three,” the director shared.

What to Expect in HOPE 2: Nightfall, the Military, and North Korea?

If you’ve already checked out the film, get ready for a completely different vibe in the next chapter. Na gave fans a sneak peek at what’s coming:

The Sun Goes Down: “The first movie takes place almost entirely in broad daylight, but right near the end, the sun starts to set,” Na noted. “To give you a little spoiler, when night falls in the sequel, military reinforcements are finally going to arrive.”

Bum-seok’s Wild Journey: Hwang Jung-min’s character Bum-seok took a brutal beating, but he’s still kicking. Na teased, “He might be limping badly, but he’s still alive and fighting. Don’t be surprised if he ends up crossing over into North Korea!” Talk about expanding the universe!

Will the Sequel Actually Happen?

While nothing is carved in stone just yet, the green lights are looking pretty bright. Na shared that two different entities have already stepped up, insisting the sequel must be made and offering to fund it. “Nothing is officially locked in yet, but the discussions so far have been very encouraging,” he said.

However, a sequel might not be Na’s immediate next project. He admitted that while shooting HOPE, another dark, blood-soaked idea started brewing in his brain.

“Making HOPE took a long time, and I started feeling like I’ve been standing out in the sunshine for way too long,” Na joked. “The overall story of HOPE is about goodness, but I can feel the darkness calling me. We’ll just have to see what happens next!”

Whether he heads back into the dark thriller genre or takes us on a military-backed, North Korea-crossing adventure with HOPE 2, one thing is for sure—we will be seated!
